Molten, it's possible running Softube Modular without daw??

@deldridg
Now 2022 and this remains sagely advice. You have a great skill in engaging the viewer and your efforts are much appreciated mate!

I'm just getting into modular and opted for Softube as a "soft" start and it's been amazing in getting me up to speed. I'm now navigating my way around the thing with half a clue, having been unable to make anything happen only a few days ago. Just added their Model '72 (based on Minimoog Model D from 1972 ) and am having a total blast. The synth is modular too so you can have multiple oscillators etc. sending CV everywhere in a way you couldn't do with the original. Sacrilege perhaps, but a ton of fun. Anyway - great vid and cheers from Sydney - Dave

Still stands up five years later. Softube's Modular is also a fantastic bridge to the physical modular world. This is a fantastic introduction video.

I tried to send envelope signals from softube to my DC coupled interface but I can't do it for the life of me.
I was hoping you may show some integration with some of your hardware.
Vcv rack works with everything but I can't get softube to send CV signals. Triggers and gates work.

I've used VCV Rack 2 (free) and Multiphonics CV-1by Applied Acoustics Systems (way less than the cost of even one average module). Both are excellent programs. Or they are the equivalent to crack. Then I bought an Arturia MiniBrute 2S, and I've just ordered Cre8Audio's Niftykeyz and 6 modules for about $2300 Canadian. I've well and truly fallen down the rabbit hole, because I've still got 42HP to fill, and I'm thinking that after that I'll need a RackBrute to attach to my MiniBrute...

Wonderful video, very well presented! The great things for me with Softube's Modular (bearing in mind that I became interested in it after using my friend's giant wall of every great unit you can imagine) are: 1) every unit I had ear-marked to buy came out as an add-on, 2) I don't have to mess about with PSUs or soldering irons ever, 3) I couldn't save a real rack beyond writing it in a notebook or maybe taking photos, 4) my 'rack' goes with me anywhere, even on a plane, and 5) —and this is the big one—I can automate from the sequencer and inside Modular just by waggling a pot. So, I can get the 'hands-on' performance with pots using my MIDI controller, I can record it, and I can go in and edit tiny portions of it if I want. For me, all of those positives together make it better than the hardware (point #1 being vital here, of course!). I know that the same rack wouldn't sound as rich if we ran my software side by side with the real thing, but the person listening to my music doesn't get to hear that distinction. All that matters to a listener is that the music I make stirs their emotions, and I can fake a lot of that extra subtle fuzz and gloop with post-processing.

@barrowmeoct04
This lesson was hugely useful for someone (me) who has just started delving into software modular (vcv rack). This was so simple but you basically put in a nutshell some of the things I hadn't got to grips with yet, such as where to connect the ADSR and how to get midi notes into the modular (that one had me mystified for the last couple of days). I'll need to watch this a few times over for these very essential basics to sink in while I continue to experiment with the software. Thank you.

@InvertedPopesMusic
Nice intro and as a noob to eurorack I am going to get my hands on Softube Modular and give it a go. Personally coming from a very traditional knob twiddling background of no presets etc, I have always missed the tactile physical element when using software based synths etc. I embrace it but the ability to get hands on again with real knobs and patch cables is very exciting. I look forward to the rest of this series.

Love your videos so much witty self deprecating humor, your upbeat passion and humble mindset and candid experiences are refreshing! Ignore the idiots who downvote. I am at this stage right now due to budget and learning process before I drop 5-15k on an entry level modular system.

@jimmyklane
I strongly recommend that you and everyone here that’s new to modular and basic synthesis “facts” check out the amazing Synth Secrets series by Sound On Sound’s Gordon Reid. It will take you through the very basics all the way through synthesizing just about anything your mind can conceive. Mind you, this is NOT to dog you out or shame you, but some of your initial thoughts on how synthesizers functioned were way way off base and therefore you (like all of us) could learn a lot about how to use a modular beyond bleeps and bloops....they were the first noises I made, but once I learned that I could take 15 modules and make a serious attempt at a real cymbal without a sampler I was hooked. Again, that’s not to say that bleeps and bloops aren’t a valid aim....all Buchla owners know that ;-) but a software modular (VCV Rack is excellent and free for those with lean wallets) takes away all the limitations and you can HAVE a huge modular “wall” without needing $15,000 of kit! Kudos to you for showing those new to synthesis how and why a synthesizer works! Well Done!

@NathanChisholm041
Why not just stick to one thing and master that! one day you are one bitwig next you're using some old russian leftover modular boxes with cables and diode! Sorry im new to you're videos so what is your style off music? I mean you dont look like a Deadmau fan or a raver or a Futermusic fan so what exactly do you listen to and make? Is it just those beeps and blinks that sound off some old 50s sci fi movie?

Why pay for Softtube? There are at least five free modulars for PC: Sunvox, VCVrack, Wren, LWM rack, and Automatonism.
Комментарий от : @EternalCosmicTruthOrchestra

@KNHSynths
What do you think about the free VCV Rack ? You should give it a try ( vcvrack.com/) as it is free there is no risk !
I'm possessing Softube Modular but even on a very good PC it is eating too much CPU :-( And user experience is not very good (moving modules is a pain in the ass for example). I'm sure you will love this new eurorack simulation.

thanks Robin. i picked this up a couple years ago i think when it hit the street. they had a great ltd time intro offer that was unavoidable. sparked my curiosity about modular immediately. i just fear jumping into all of it head heels will limit my actual output. i've actually been pulling back my options lately to get some tunes finished. i suppose i will revisit it all once the ball gets rolling again i absolutely love synthesis and sound design. i'll be following your journey as time permits! glad you're doing all these vids bud. carry on

Enjoying your journey! Totally get the power in limitation. I've just got one Doepfer vco running into my Minibrute so far and it opened up lots of cool stuff. In a way it's good I can't afford too many modules at once so I've got time to explore.

@MrFlatlandcycle
I noticed that @chemicalBR0 asked about saving software patches, this is a bit off that topic. How on earth do you organize a physical hardware patch library. My fevered brain says take a video and name it something descriptive. I can imagine trying to recreate sounds would be a Promethean task. Some videos hint at taking a sample and just use that in a mix.
Комментарий от : @MrFlatlandcycle

@RoboticusMusic
Sounds very flat and boring. Do you feel like they slacked on the algorithms?
Комментарий от : @RoboticusMusic

@chemicalBR0
I got modular last week and i've learned a lot about how the signal flows in a patch. (and i don;t mean just modular patches).

i've just been tinkering with modular to get an understanding of the basics of making a sound (any half decent sound is an achievement atm :).

it's a lot of fun but already I'm wishing it was real cables i was plugging in (do you know if there's a way to set modular up to show the cables without having to mouse over them)

also how the hell do you save patches? I';ve looked through the manual but can't find it (the manual is a pain in the arse as it includes instructions for ALL of softubes plugins)
tbh I can't believe there isn't a preset browser with a save button or something.

You're doing a great job with this series. I don't disagree with any of the points you've made. I went an only slightly different direction when I started up at the end of last year. I started with Reaktor Blocks, and had some fun with it, but found it to ultimately be uninvolving, and very difficult to follow more complicated patches. But it did give me a feel for the basic "moves" of modular patching. I spent a long time then considering my options for going "physical". Long story short ended up with a Pittsburgh Lifeforms 301 semi-modular setup (I like the patch point locations better than the Mom).

Naturally I started adding modules (the case is full after two months!), and as you've mentioned re semi-modular I was challenged just a bit when first "de-normalling" bits of the Pitts in order to mix and match. But with practice that has passed. I now tend to think of the Pitts as a bunch of independent modules that have been welded together (but not necessarily wired together), unless I'm just looking to play with its as a voice (options are great).

All in all I guess I'm just weighing in to let people know you're making very valid points about the trade-offs. I'd like to emphasize that there's no right way to go about it, and any path will include some discomfort mixed with pleasant surprises.

I'll close by saying "please come check out my modular patch/performance vids". Might be interesting to see how a relative beginner is progressing, both in equipment and (hopefully) skill. I really need to work on variety, too!

Thanks for your efforts!

@KelvinHemas
Thanks for great video. I also had some pain when trying to patch my first modular emulation vst. But when I started buying real modules it all became very straight forward and simple. Never bought more than two modules at the time so there was never an overwhelming bunch of patch points to figure out. Also the vst modulars are awesome in their own but does not sound as great and cant handle audio rate modulation and lots of patching that well because of cpu limitations.
