@buffalobillh
You’ve had a go on the Wyvern and the Eastman 632. Despite them being a bit apples vs. oranges, would mind sharing your thoughts on both in terms of comparison/contrast?

Looking forward to the next Tuba installment!

Thanks!

TubaDylan, what is the first number your band is playing at the end of the review? I played it in college 46 years ago. I can NOT remember who wrote it. I'd like to encourage the band I play in to play it.

@tubadylan
I think it would work will in College for solos, but to cover all the solo work you would want, I'd recommend getting an F tuba at some point as well.

@kyleconductorandtuba
I've heard the Wyvern be referred to as a 4.5/4 tuba as opposed to a 5/4 tuba. Is the Wyvern good for soloing? I need my own horn for college and I've been looking extensively for the right horn.

Tubadylan, thanks for the review. Have you tried the Wessex Anton model in CC? If so, can you compare and contrast the two models?

@Cjpeepeepoopoo
you should do a review of the Mack brass Wiseman horn, I think these 3 are like the 3 Chinese honchos of cc tubas

@MusicalEagle
How would you characterize the sound of this versus the Bruckner? They look very similar in overall shape for past the valve block.

@dwaynegraham3756
Do you think you will be reviewing Wessex's CC 5/4 Rotary Valve Tuba ‘Anton’ – TC491 or the BBb 5/4 5-Rotary-Valve Tuba ‘Luzern’ – TB575?

@dwaynegraham3756
I play in a community band which has 42 members. Bass section is 1 baritone sax, 1 bass sax, 1 euphonium, 3 bass clarinets, a bassoon and my Eb tuba. Which would be a better fit the Wessex CC or the Eastman 632?

@24eGardian
Great video and thanks for the info. I've been playing a chinese CC tuba for almost 6 years now. Along the years I've had to make quite some changes to it to keep up with the demands of my study. The main tuning slide was shortened twice. The first, second and fifth valve slides were also shortened. On request of my teacher the first valve slide was altered to function as a trigger. A ton of work was done on the rotary valves to make them more quiet and faster. After all that work it finaly became a decent tuba.

I'm glad to see that the technology has improved and the chinese are able to make a decent tuba that does not need so many work done.

Have you tried the Thomann tuba's yet? Their Bb tubas are not bad and are instruments I would definitely recommend for beginners or for someone with a smaller budget. Their CC tuba sounds good but due to poor design it's very hard to hold. The centre of gravity so far away from the body that most of the weight is supported by the left arm.
I'm curious to see your review on that tuba.

Sounds good, but seems that it comes across pretty pricy for a Chinese tuba.

@greatvib3s
Let me be clear in this: I am NOT attacking tubadylan, I am stating my criticisms of this horn based off of what I've heard intonation wise.
--------------------
youtu.be/h1YAVDSS7Os?t=1005
Listen to the octaves of C. Pedal C is slightly sharp (as can be expected, however), low C is in tune, in the staff C is slightly flat, and middle C is just horrendously flat. That's not what I would consider great intonation, being that the octaves are not perfectly (or near perfectly) in tune.
youtu.be/h1YAVDSS7Os?t=1068
I can only imagine the slide manipulation that a typical C tuba such as that would take. Maybe you're comfortable with that, or just used to manipulating slides, and maybe this horn is better than some CC tubas (it definitely is), but I'd still take the Eastman 632 ANY day over that. My personal preference is to be in tune more of the time (ideally all of the time but I do only have 46 chromosomes...) and have an easier time doing so.

Then again maybe the horn does play well in tune and it was just a fluke in the recording. He still sounds pretty good either way! Great video of really showing all the critical details of the horn and more. The humor is appreciated as well!

@tubapix
Great review of a great horn! I went to the Wessex store in Spring Lake, Michigan (just a few minutes from Grand Rapids) December 2016 and played several horns including the Wyvern. The Wyvern was by far the superior horn and the best horn I have ever played. Very open and full sound. Best of all the intonation was fantastic. Andy was extremely helpful in setting up the horns and giving me pointers on how the horns played in groups that he is in.

@chrisclendenen
Great review! I've recently picked up the horn again after a 30-odd year hiatus (Hey! Where'd my chops go?) upon the invitation of the local university's chamber orchestra. While I'm loving every minute of this, I'm not sure this is a definite long-term relationship, and I'm considering my options before pulling the trigger on a purchase. Thanks for the information, and the inspiration. chris

@timothynorris7984
The Wessex " Wyvern " 5/4 tuba I have is just superb and the sound is so luxurious. The instrument is such great value for money and I just love playing it in a tuba section, within a large symphonic wind band, with a colleague playing his compensated EEb right-facing tuba.The combination of the two in band is wonderful and the overall bass section sound is so velvety, just right for the rest of the band to sit upon ! @tubanator2010
I would like to thank you for this video, I wish more players would do this to help aspiring musicians get an idea of how to progress with their craft, as far as choosing instruments. I own an Eb Schiller John Fletcher Copy horn and I fell in love with it, though it is pointless here in the US outside of my own personal enjoyment. I have also played on a Mack Brass 186 CC copy and it plays inline with its namesake counterpart. Chinese horns are not what they used to be, they are affordable options to name brand and give you a great sound.

Thank you again tubadylan, and I will be looking into this horn more in the future. Unless the 6/4 comes out before I make the move haha. TUBA LOVE!
