 | GS here. Solod this guy today. Took 41 minutes but considering you can't smash him like other monsters, it's probably best to just punish him after he does his moves. If you run out of potions, return to the camp. No shame in that. Most important thing is to probably stay away from the stupid breath attack. Since for whatever really realistic reason, it staggeres you and can even knock you in the air and he comes right after you, one-shooting you. Just go out there and run around him and check his moves. Come back later and try.  | Think you completely miss the point of bringing Torch Pods or what it counters. Torch Pods don't do anything to what Vaal Hazak generates, so if you are in any of the 3 "bottom" zones (Nest and 2 zones leading to the nest) then Torch pods do in fact do nothing. Where they do matter however is higher up. In zones where you have this yellowish gas around, which is where Vaal Hazak starts for AT version, you can remove the DOT damage from the yellow gas. If you do this you cut the DOT damage by at least a third in those zones, and it doesn't cost you anything to pick up since there's a nice convenient pile right outside the Central camp. So usually the fight starts in the higher zones, make a bonfire with a torch pod on the ground to clear the yellow gas, put on Tempura mantle and go ham. Oda shows up at some point, let them turf war, then Dung pod away Oda if he's still around. Eventually after enough damage Vaal starts going down so you won't need to Torch Pod anymore. Finally he goes in his room and you covered pretty well how to finish the fight. Game seems to use the term Effluvia to both describe the environmental one and the one off monsters, which makes me wonder if a translation problem happened. For example if you use the Armor skill Effluvial Expert (Off a Hornataur armor set) it does make you immune to the yellow gas, but not the blue one Vaal Hazak pushes out, and you'll still get the nasty debuff. Do combos and laugh while the weakest elder dragon cant reach you, you heal through its only gimmick and mount punish it to victory. Use a blunt bug for extra bm. Ps.  | I tend to use Insect Glaive for this and run Health Boost 3, Recovery Speed 3, Effluvia Resist 3. I take Temporal Mantle and Health Booster and basically hug the side of his main body. Whenever he gets to max level effluvial aura I drop a Health Booster and make sure I pop an Immunizer before each stage of the fight. I don't run Health Augment (I actually don't have the Streamstones I need for IG!) so for IG at least I wouldn't say it's mandatory. I did try the Nergigante 3 part set boost ability but it's really not worth using. One thing to note is that when he does his sweeping beam, don't stand too close to his hind legs. He will sometimes slowly walk forward and his hind legs will trip you. Using IG primarily ground-based I found him a pretty simple fight- I tend to save the mount until he's fairly low on health.  | Re: Torch pods The "miasma" from Vaal Hazak himself is actually completely different from normal effluvia, and is unaffected by the cleansing effects of torch pods. Since lvl3 Effluvia Resistance will already prevent the standard effluvia from doing any meaningful damage, its flat-out not worth spending the time to grab torch pods and clear the effluvia. All you're doing is wasting time that could be spent attacking Vaal Hazak himself, on top of making yourself vulnerable by focusing on aiming your slinger instead of avoiding attacks.  | Killed him with CB, LS, Lance, GL and Bow. If you have access to a wide 4 gunlance and can augment it for health. Use Miasma protection x3 , guard up (do set if you don’t have jewel), vitality, medicine and artillery charm. This is by far the safest way to kill him, you can almost always do 2 shots and a reload or 2 shots, block 1 shot reload btw his attacks. Also with temp mantle up just go ham. Health regen on the weapon will keep you topped up. When he stands up on his hind legs and sprays the ground.  | The challenger mantle actually is a really good strategy. Just make sure to let the odo turf war go off and then pull vaal down to the lower areas. Its much easier fighting him down there. From my experience with multiplayer that tail whip combo is the 2nd dangerous and probably a hunters killer move beside the beam, i saw too many times val hazak get double kill or end the quest with this move, specially to that melee hunter that keep attackin hazak butt just be swiped out of life. altho Counter melee weapon like long sword is actually good vs hazak. well i actually enjoy my self fighting at vhazak with other players, its more challenging specially to cut the tail, just my personal challenge, because it's feelsgood when it actually chop off. I was standing behind him and about four in-game meters to his right when he targeted someone else with this move, and it STILL got me.
