I have 2 Peter wrights anvils also. One is in much worse shape than your no 2 . I would need 250 to 300$ for it. Its 176 lbs. You got a really good deal on yours. I haven't seen one go on auction for less than 1.50 to 2$ and that was 15 years ago. Yours sounds just like both of mine.

Most any anvil has red hot metal worked on it regularly. I would doubt you even came close to changing the surface hardness. Anvil looks great and now it's useable again. No need to make apologies for saving a piece of history from being nothing more than a huge yard art thingy.

@RovingPunster
From what i've read, you don't want a mirror finish on your work deck, because it's waaaay too slippery (not a good idea to play knock hockey with burning hot steel). To solve that, I'd definitely rough up the working surfaces with say 120 grit, to provide some much needed traction for anything placed on top.

Just found your channel yesterday. I am an aspiring blacksmith. Haven't tried to do the first thing yet, AND I have a 100lbs Peter Wright. Got it for $100 at a yard sale. It had a piece broken off the top that was built back up with low carbon welding. Hope that was the correct method. Watching the video was very enjoyable and informative.

I found an old Peter wright anvil that weighs about 388 lbs and it has some pretty significant damage on one side that someone tried to grind out. I was thinking about welding a plate of tool steel to it to give it a new face and to repair the damaged area. Is this the proper way to do this or is there a better way?

@FlatBrokeForge
This is the second video I've found where the face is being called the "Table". I like your videos, but if you are putting these out there for instruction, please use the correct terminology for anvils. The table is the little flat between the horn and face.

And yes, they welded a FACE onto wrought anvils. Otherwise you wouldn't have rebound and the wrought would crush over time.

@donalharris3724
This is a rather old video, but what does it look like today, because you were right. There are better ways to do it.

I have never done it and likely never will. I would likely pay someone else who has experience with anvil repair. But from what I have read, your preheat to 212 degrees is not hot enough. Heating the anvil slowly till it is 350 to 400 degrees seems to be the norm.

I was a little disappointed that you didn’t show any of the actual work except for a few shots of the grinding you did to remove the prior welds. You could have shown a few shot shots of the various steps after that without the risk of it being a long and boring “how to” video.

To those who may see this video and wonder why he didn’t just mill the face and corners flat, just as others were curious about 3 years ago when he posted this, the bulk of the anvil is wrought iron. There is only a thin plate of hardened steel forge welded to the top. It is very easy to mill away too much. If that happens, you no longer have a useable anvil. You have scrap.

Anyway. I enjoy your videos. I have no idea why you decided it was necessary to defend spike knives so vigorously, but I do enjoy watching. Especially those (which would probably be most) you start off by saying “I have no idea how to do this, but I’m doing it anyway. May work...May not. We’ll find out.”

That peter wright said thank you and I think every viewer would thank NOT to bounce your hammer off that face for 30 seconds! Good god that is so damn loud!😂 put a chain and magnet on that thing and deaden the ring for everyone’s sake! You’ll still hear the sound of cracks or hollows if that’s what you’re checking for. Excellent work though! Got a 100lb Peter Wrong anvil also and I’m getting the nuts up to preheat and weld the shit out of it! Thanks for the video.👍🏽

My first anvil was a peter wright with the same 117 and solid wrought markings. Also pretty much the same damage with the same dip in the middle. Is there a reason for the Chain around your anvil
Комментарий от : @arcturusbbqsausagemaking2435

@gehutch
One of my anvils (Peter Wright 1-2-1) needed a tuneup about like yours, except no paint!
To repoint the horn we used pikes in the pike holes, turned it upside down with the horn in the fire. Wet mud at the horn base and once a red heat, easily tapped into shape. Anvil horns are just wrought iron, so with a little more heat from a rosebud tip, even the splits in the very tip healed right up. Ain't wrought iron wonderful to work with?
We used about 10 pounds of Stoody Build Up rod to line the entire face and edges. A friendly engine machine shop milled the face. We rounded most of the edges to our liking and that was that. Been doing good work with it for about 30 years.
