WOW! I just had a slice of this and I am calling it the Gumbo of cakes. The cake is like a good Gumbo loaded with a burst of different flavors going off. First there is the Orange-Lemon of the cake, then comes the icing, then a nice rich buttery flavor! The over all flavor is very pronounced, not at all like that tasteless store bought stuff. And on a side note, my ordered items all arrived quickly and in perfect condition. Love the skeleton gloves, worked perfect for removing the cake from a hot oven. A comedy of errors! 😅Laugh with me. First, I have never grated the zest of an orange or lemon - quite an experience. Knicked thumb can attest to that. Then, I always reread my recipe to ensure I have included everything. I DIDN'T expect to find I had added the juice to the batter!!!🤣 Surprise - It baked to doneness testing in same time! 🙃 I'm sure it would have been better with the juice poured over the baked cake, but turned out good. Now, I didn't have powdered sugar, but John to the rescue. I didn't have a coffee grinder at hand, so I tried the food processor and just got fluffy sugar. 😆Now, great news. I remembered that I had kept the grinder from my mother's estate, so I dug it out. I made my own powdered sugar!!! Just as you showed! (Grinder now has a new home on my counter.) I just started using fresh lemons oh my god the difference is amazing i didnt have a fresh orange so i used the same amount of clemintine juice instead and i sprinkled brown sugar on top like u did in other recipes to give it a crunch and the other half i did with juice and frosting,it was fantastic x John have u ever done a lemon peel cake/pudding ? Hello John discovered this recipe and your Channel, amazing! You have some awesome recipes! I am not a big Baker or Cook for that matter at all, but every now and then bake a cake and being a Citrus fan, could not wait to try this. Yesterday it was pouring with rain and couldn’t be bothered to go out to the shops so decided to bake it with what I had in the cupboard! The only difference in a couple of the ingredients was the sugar and oil! I had coconut oil and olive oil. I thought I had just about enough coconut oil but ran out half way measuring it, so then added the olive oil to make up the quantity required. I only had raw caster sugar, but used it anyway and thought well we will see how it turns out. As I’d used some olive oil I was worried that taste would come through so I added a teaspoon of vanilla extract! Can I say it turned out fab and delicious!! I was sorry I didn’t have the icing sugar to finish it, but after covering it with the lemon and orange juice, I sprinkled it lightly with caster sugar! I cannot wait to try some more of your recipes now, but will make sure I have sunflower oil as a staple for your recipes! Also can I just say your tips are so helpful, even down to the oven temp! Your recipe sounded so yummy-good. I had to try your recipe. I am located in the US. My cake batter was definitely much thicker than yours. I think the flour here is milled different to yours. I find this true in the flour from Australia to the US. I added more liquid trying to save the batter. Can you tell me what the ratio of the flour used would be from England to US? My family calls this Quick Bread. My GrannyB use to take the cake/bread out of the oven about 10 minutes early. Polk holes in the cake. Add the juice. And return it to the oven to finish cooking.
