@ANDOR_1312
As a Paraguayan I will never stop thanking you for the video. War is the worst instance that society has when you can not coexist diplomatically, that's why it's important that we all try to study it and learn something from it. That way you avoid that the same mistakes are made and, most importantly, the bonds between brother countries be strengthened by overcoming and forgiving old mistakes

This battle is kind of like a Paraguayan Pickett's charge, not 3 years after that actual disaster in the American civil war

1861-65 acw
1866 this battle and south american war
1866 sadowa and austro-prussian war
1870 franco-prussian war

One thing wrong in this video is that Brasil didn't have any reason to ask Argentina to cross Corrientes, they had direct access to both Paraguay and Uruguay. Paraguay, however, did need to ask to walk across Corrientes. Mitre didn't let Paraguay troops to cross but did let Brasilian ships to cross argentines internal rivers to Paraguay. Lopez had sent a message to Mitre declaring his advance to Corrientes, which Mitre hide to make the paraguayan invasion as a surprise attacked. Another thing is that Lopez was allied with Justo Jose Urquiza, former president and governor of the province of Entre Rios, who tell Lopez he would help him againts the Buenos Aires goverment by raising his loyal Entre Rios Army, this however did not happen and Urquiza sell cows and horses to the Allied army. Urquiza's troops then rebeled againts him and join the rebel gaucho guerrillas that started to emerge since the unpopularity of the war in Argentina.
Thanks for the video, greeting from Paraguay.

What should be pointed out, the whites in Brazil would not fight in this war and sent their black slaves to fight. The slaves were promised their freedom if they go and fight, but it never happened. Instead, land was given to the white immigrants to come live in Brazil.

In the center was Brazilian forces with the "revolver artillery" commanded by Émile Louis Mallet, better known as Marshal Emílio Mallet, the Baron of Itapevi, whose said "Let them come, they will not pass".
The 3 times shot (he was shot, not only his horse) and 3 times repeatedly back in action, was Brigadier Antônio de Sampaio, commanding the infantry troops. The medal "Sangue do Brasil" for wounds in combat, as the purple heart, have 3 red stars, im memory of his 3 deadly injuries.
The Marshal Manuel Luís Osório, Marquis of Herval, was the fearless cavalry leader, running all over the battlefield.

The dead of Mariscal Solano López was at 1st Mar, no at "17". Those battle, in Brazilian Army, is know a "Battle of the Army's Patronuses" because the Patronuses of the Infantry (General Sampaio-wounded and dead 1 mount after), Cavalry (General Osório, "the Brave in the Braves"), and of the Artillery (Lt Cnl Mallet, Marshall after the war) fought in Tuyuty.
My tribute to the brave Guarani fighters, who fought and died there in defense of their homeland.

In Brazil, we didn’t hear about this battle in school, we were taught that the battle of Riachuelo was the tipping point because it gave naval supremacy to the allies and the siege of Uruguaiana marked the end of the Paraguayan offensive and after that they lost the initiative.
But this battle is a good summary of the entire war, a reckless offensive against a superior enemy in numbers and position, that ended in bloodshed because the Paraguayan leadership refused to stop.
Lopez believed he was the South America Napoleon, but Brazil was his Russia.

@paraguayocubascolomes9107
Majesty:

After respectfully kissing V.M.'s Imperial hand, she went on to comply with his august order to inform V.M. privately, of the situation and most culminating incidents of the imperial armies, and precisely that V.M. has commissioned me.

Notwithstanding the effort destined to form the consciousness of the troops, that the unfortunate event of Tujutî was favorable for our weapons, as the small rest of our forces in that field reestablished the possession of the lost positions in the hands of the enemy, during combat, such have been its effects, as I already had the honor of informing VM that it is morally impossible to quell the profound shock that this deplorable event produced and is still producing in our troops.

The glorious and important events that for their part crowned our weapons in Vanguard and gave us the opportunity to carry out the execution of our great thought, our great military operation and our great strategic step of completely besieging the enemy by water and land, such as the The most effective, the most powerful and the only means of defeating him, making him surrender for lack of food, for lack of ammunition and for lack of any resource that is provided with his communication with the rest of the country, has served, there is no doubt, of an admirable and prodigious stimulus for our forces. After cutting the telegraphic line in its course from Villa del Pilar, after having cut off the enemy's land communication, on the eastern part of the Paraguay River, and reaching the left bank of this river and established at a point of the strong battery , of our best guns, as I have an officer and particularly informed VM about all this, it was natural that there should be a great and universal rejoicing in the whole Army, in which we participate, to the highest degree, its leaders, because we certainly believed that no more than four or six, and at most, eight or ten days, it would only be necessary for López to surrender unconditionally with his entire army.

The contrast of Tujutî was lulled by this unexpected and very happy prospect, but I am sorry to have to inform V.M. that if great was the hope, the encouragement and the satisfaction of the imperial armies of which I have the great honor of being their commander-in-chief and to an even greater degree was their growing disillusionment and their demoralizing discouragement, when it was seen by practical deeds of regrettable effects and consequences, that the enemy (Paraguay) not only conserves its vigor, after so many days of closed siege, but that, deceiving our hopes and our means, it opened a great and long road of communication through the part of the Chaco, which is It is protected and out of reach of our weapons.

All the encounters, all the assaults, all the existing combats since Coimbra and Tujutî, show and demonstrate, in an incontestable way, that Paraguayan soldiers are characterized by a bravery, a daring, intrepidity and a bravery that borders on the ferocity, without example in the history of the world.

When these soldiers were conscripts, they already had those qualities and had been trained in surprising ways. Today these soldiers combine those qualities with the military expertise acquired in combat; their proverbial discipline of dying rather than surrendering and dying before being taken prisoner, because they have that order from their Chief, had been increased by their acquired morale, it is necessary to say it, because it is the truth, in victories, which comes to form a whole that constitutes those soldiers in an extraordinary, invincible, superhuman soldier.

López also has the supernatural gift of magnetizing soldiers, infusing them with a spirit that cannot be sufficiently explained with words: the fact is that they become extraordinary, far from fearing danger, facing with surprising courage, far from saving their lives They seem to be looking with frenzied interest and an opportunity to heroically sacrifice her and sell her for another life or for the many lives of their enemies. All this means that, before Paraguayan soldiers, the numerical advantage, the element advantage and the position advantage are not a guarantee: everything is easy and accessible for them. These circumstances, which are of inestimable importance, are joined by a truly surprising phenomenon. The number of López's soldiers is incalculable, every calculation in this regard is fallible, because all calculations have failed (...)

Your Majesty, it would please me to be especially in charge of the use of gold, to, accompanied to the siege, solve the campaign of Paraguay, which has been becoming too long and loaded with sacrifice and apparently impossible due to the action of arms, but the gold, Your Majesty , It is an ineffective appeal against the national fanaticism of the Paraguayans since they are under the fascinating look and the magnifying spirit of López. And it is necessary to convince oneself, because it would be crass folly to maintain the opposite, that: the soldiers, or simple citizens, women and children, Paraguay, everything that he and López are, are the same thing, a single thing, a single moral and indissoluble; which comes to give as a result that the proclaimed idea that the war is against López and not against the Paraguayan people, is not only a chimera, but that, understanding that López is the real means of their existence, it is understood also that it is impossible that López can live without the Paraguayan people, and that it is impossible to live without López (...)

And it is here that the logic shows that it is impossible to defeat López, and that the victory of the war against Paraguay is impossible; because it is unsustainable that it is being waged against López, and that instead of being a war that points towards the goal of legitimate aspirations, it is a determined and definitive war of destruction, of annihilation.

This shows, unquestionably, that we did not have two hundred thousand men to continue the war against Paraguay, we would have in case of victory, managed to reduce the entire Paraguayan population to ashes; And this is not an exaggeration, because I am in possession of irrefutable data that proves in advance that, if we finished killing the men, we would have to fight with the women, who will replace them with equal courage, with the same martial ardor and with the impetus and perseverance that inspire the example of loved ones and nurture the thirst for revenge. And would a possible triumph over a people of that nature be admissible? (...)
how long, how many men, how many lives and how many elements and resources will we need to end the war, that is, to turn the entire Paraguayan population into smoke and dust, to kill even the fetus in the woman's womb and kill it not as a fetus, although like a champion. And what we would have achieved, it is also difficult to say: it would be to sacrifice ten times greater number of men than Paraguayans are, it would be to sacrifice ten or twenty times greater number of women and children than are Paraguayan children and women; It would be to sacrifice a hundred thousand times greater number of all kinds of resources than Paraguayan resources are; It would be to conquer not a town, but a vast cemetery in which we would bury the entire Paraguayan population and resources in nothingness and a hundred times more than the Brazilian population and resources. And what would we be about a vast cemetery? We would be the gravediggers who would have to bury the ashes of our victims, who would respond to God and the world of their cries, and more than this, the Paraguayan population disappeared, the Paraguayan nation disappeared and the Brazilian population disappeared in equivalent proportion, who would it be, but only and exclusively Brazil, the one responsible before foreign nations for the immense damages caused by this war and its subjects.

All these considerations and others that I still omit, to leave it to the enlightened interpretation of Your Majesty, make me insist on the idea of peace.

TO PEACE WITH LÓPEZ, peace, Imperial Majesty, is the only means of salvation that remains for us. LÓPEZ IS INVINCIBLE, LÓPEZ CAN EVERYTHING; and without peace, Your Majesty, Everything will be lost, and before witnessing that disastrous cataclysm, while I am at the head of the imperial armies, I beg Your Majesty the most special grace to grant me my resignation from the honorable position that Your Majesty has entrusted to me. .

I understand that my high duties have been fulfilled, as marshal and commander in chief of the armies of Your Majesty, as a loyal subject of Your Majesty, of the qualified dignities that bind me to the imperial house, and of my loyalty as a citizen, I beg V Your Majesty, please deign to receive my private presentation in good time.

I sincerely wish you the august life of Your Majesty, the excellent health of the Imperial Family, and the success of Your Majesty's Imperial Government.

I kiss the Imperial hand of Your Majesty

The Marquis of Caxías -Luis Alves de Lima e Silva

THE DARK SIDE OF THE TRIPLE ALLIANCE WAR...

Around 90% of Paraguay's male population died in the war. But whgat is missing is that thise 4 countries where africans were enslaved comprised in some cases of more that 50-60% of the polpulation and were sent to the front lines to gain (buy back) their FREEDOM. This is particularly the case for Argentina where they got wiped out then replace by europeans etc.
This is based on the early census, pre war census. Today Argentina is composed of less thn 0.5% of african descendants where compared to countries like euqador and colombia that did not participate in uch a war that still have a high african descent population.
That would be something to look into but I undestand it would not look great to be told that these countries seixed an opportunity to get rid of their former slaves which they did not need any more and which number and colour was and still is an issue.

Any similarity with today's military recrutement ads towards blacks in western countries is pure coincidence!

"Damn war. This war will be the ruin of the winner and the complete destruction of the loser." (Barão de Mauá)

And so it was, because Brazil and Argentina contracted large foreign debts to maintain their war machines. This war was largely responsible for the fall of Dom Pedro II and the overthrow of the monarchy in Brazil, with the complicated economic situation, the army feeling despised by the emperor was co-opted by the positivist and republican ideas.

"The Paraguayan War was a big deal for the Jewish Rotschild and his fellow Christian Barings, whose loans found a nation or overthrow a throne" (Lord Byron)

Brazil borrowed GBP 10 million from Rotschild bank and GBP 4 million from Barings bank. In addition, the war lasted 5 long years and Brazil managed to destroy Paraguay. The Paraguayan population was wiped out in the war. Solano López put women, children and even the elderly to fight in the war, because the men of legal age were destroyed in the war.

impotant note. Altough it was not a clever move for paraguay to declare war against Argentina, its worth pointing that Paraguay hoped the invaded Argentina province of Corrientes, as well the province of entre Rios would join his side in revolt against Argentine national governament. These provinces were controlled by Gen. Urquiza, a powerful and wealth local Caudillo who opposed the Argentine national governament and could field a powerful army. Also the two provinces populations were more supportive to paraguay than Buenos Aires. However, by surprise invading Argentina paraguay made politically hard for Urquiza to join its cause, because he didnt had time to make political arregments for a rebelion and would be seen as a lonely open traitor. Also Brazil paid Urquiza lots of money to keep him loyal to argentina

Late to the party, but the conflicts of this time period (US Civil War, Crimean War, Paraguayan War, Pacific War, Franco-Prussian War, and on up the the Boxer Rebellion and Russo-Japanese War) are criminally disregarded in military history circles.

People seem to think that nothing of note happened between Napoleon and WW1, but these conflicts show us the shift towards larger scale, mechanization, and "total war" of the 20th century.

It isn't mentioned here but the basic reason why Uruguay desired independence from Brazil in the first place was because what is now Uruguay was populated mainly by Spanish-speaking settlers from South of the Rio de la Plata, in what is now Argentina, while the formerly-Portuguese Brazilians spoke Portuguese. That automatically made Uruguayans an ethnic and political minority group in Brazil, which did not go down well with Uruguayans. By the same token, it is not mentioned that the major reason why Paraguay was interested in interfering in Uruguayan internal political affairs (which was the basic cause of this war) was that Paraguay was a land-locked country. Paraguay's sole access to the sea, and the outside world, was via the Uruguay River, which ran through Uruguay. If a political party took control of the government of Uruguay that happened to be hostile to Paraguay, then the entire country could easily be cut off from the outside world.

León de Palleja's diary is available to the military officers in their library. A friend of mine could read it and showed how our little force did the best, even under the terrible conditions they had to face. Leon the Palleja died in the midst of a Battle, and the uruguayans(in the chaos of battle) stopped fighting to salute their leader
